The 2020 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) conference was in Las Vegas last week. To say the technology is advanced is by far an understatement.
Aside from my unparalleled nerdy wonder and awe of the new technologies, I was there to see how all this technology and data being gathered from all these devices will lead to more refined digital target markets. These will be the new screens and devices on which we would be advertising your businesses in the coming years.
Voice search is still moving forward as a leader in search, as expected, with Google Assistant and Alexa being big winners. Autonomous cars will soon allow us more time during commutes to work, research, or be entertained by screens whereby advertisements can be placed. All this means more options for digital marketers to consider when putting your digital campaigns together to effectively set your brand in the most lucrative markets possible.
New CES Technologies to Consider for 2020 and Beyond
Some key new technologies that will affect digital marketing as a whole:
- Foldable screens on cell phones, laptops, and televisions become more mainstream and more affordable
- Parallel Reality large digital screens showing different messages and images to different people
- Voice search, such as Amazon/AWS, integration of voice search into cars
- Launch of short-form mobile video platform Quibi
- Spotify’s new Podcast Ads
5G and Digital Marketing
And don’t forget the almighty 5G around the corner. 5G will bring about some amazing and difficult changes by Q4 2020…just in time for the holiday retail sprint. Keep an eye on sales and implementation during Q3 to make sure you’re able to make adjustments if 5G is integrating mainstream faster than expected.

What Does This Mean For Digital Marketing?
Besides an obvious focus on increasing personalization and contending with a more common virtual reality, it is going to be very important you do your homework and get your digital marketing campaigns customized for your target market. Not only is it annoying to see ads that in no way pertain to you, its a huge waste of your clients’ money. Analytics will be much faster…almost real time, so be ready.
Bottom line: You have to be on your toes and engaged in technology advancement as a whole. Take in all the new directions technology is heading and stay in front of changes in your digital marketing campaigns. I believe there will be more opportunities for refined market segmentation as we gather data on usage from people on these newer platforms. Almost everything now tracks usage on a general and personal level. I hope we can utilize this information in a constructive way and get our clients’ message to the most appropriate audiences. It will be a win-win.
